Minister for National Parks visits the Broads

homepage-imageThe Minister for National Parks, Huw Irranca-Davies MP, visited Ormesby Broad near Great Yarmouth  on Monday 15th March to find out about the Broads Authority’s work there.

Huw Irranca-Davies was taken on a boat trip on the Broad to learn about a mud-pumping project which will begin there next week. He also saw the lagoons which have been dug on nearby land to take the mud that is removed.

The project is aimed at increasing the depth of the broad and improving water quality. It will take about five months to complete at a cost of £62,000.

This is the latest stage in a plan which has already seen improvements to Filby and Rollesby Broads which, with Ormesby, make up the Trinity Broads. The Trinity Broads project is run in partnership with Essex & Suffolk Water, the Environment Agency and Natural England.

The Minister said he was delighted to see such an innovative project for himself.

Huw Irranca-Davies is Minister for Marine and Natural Environment as well as for the English National Parks. The Broads is a member of the National Park family.

Chief Executive of the Broads Authority, John Packman said: “We are delighted to have had the chance to show the Minister the work we are doing here. As well as having a benefit for the environment, water is taken from Ormesby Broad for drinking so it’s good for people and wildlife. Mud pumping produces fantastic results very quickly so very soon we will see the water quality improving and water plants coming back.”
