Update on Hoveton Riverside Park renovation project

The Broads Authority is pleased to announce the commencement of a significant renovation project at Hoveton Riverside Park, located on the River Bure in Norfolk.

This project aims to refurbish the existing riverside park facilities, which have reached the end of their serviceable life, by installing new steel piling and timber capping and improving the footpaths on the site for better access and safety. The work is being overseen by the Broads Authority and carried out on site by our contractors Miles Water Engineering Ltd.

Why is the project happening?

The Hoveton Riverside Park renovation is essential due to the dilapidated state of the existing timber quay heading. The Broads Authority recognizes the importance of maintaining safe and high-quality moorings across the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. This project is part of a broader effort to refurbish moorings to ensure that they remain functional, safe, and sustainable for years to come. Part of the funding has come from Defra’s “Access for All” programme, which is for physical and digital infrastructure improvements to make our Protected Landscapes like the Broads more accessible for people of all ages and abilities, and from all socio-economic backgrounds.

Key project details:

  • Start date: The project is set to begin on September 30 2024, with some minor preparation work from 26 September.
  • Estimated completion: The work is expected to be completed by December 2024. Updates on progress will be made via our website, social media and Broads Briefing newsletters.
  • Main works:
    • Installation of new steel sheet piling to replace the older piling which is starting to fail
    • Installation of new timber capping and waling around the waters edge.
    • Improvement of drainage to prevent future water retention issues along the paths.
    • Creation of a new 3-meter-wide footpath for enhanced pedestrian access on the river frontage.

Benefits of the Project:

  1. Enhanced safety: Upgraded facilities will provide a safer environment for park visitors, including those accessing the Broads Authority solar trip boat “Ra”.
  2. Improved accessibility: The new, wider footpaths will ensure better access for the public, enhancing the overall visitor experience at Hoveton Riverside Park.
  3. Long-term sustainability: The refurbishment will extend the life of the quay heading, ensuring the site remains a valuable asset to the Broads for years to come.
  4. Environmental consideration: Measures such as proper drainage and erosion prevention are incorporated to protect the park's natural environment.

Public access and safety during the project:

  • The site will be temporarily closed to public access during construction to ensure safety.
  • Appropriate security fencing will be installed to restrict access and signage to direct pedestrians whilst the works are being carried out.

This renovation project represents the Broads Authority's commitment to preserving and enhancing public spaces, ensuring that Hoveton Riverside Park continues to serve as a safe, accessible, and enjoyable destination for everyone.
